June 18 Workshop: Practical Methods to Raise Your Own Beef

A Clarion Farms Workshop:

Practical Methods to Raise Your Own Beef.

Would you like to raise your own small herd of beef cattle?  Join us on Thursday, June 18 at 5:30pm to learn inexpensive, practical methods to utilize your grassland and secure a supply of beef for your family.  Walk the pastures at Clarion Farms to see how we started grazing cattle without the burden of debt or binding contracts that can hinder small, do-it-yourself operations.  This detailed beginner level class will help you clearly understand the fundamentals of livestock ownership and management.

Here are examples of the topics we will cover:

-          Establishing personal goals for your enterprise

-          Fencing needs: the fundamentals of perimeter and interior fencing

-          Water needs: inexpensive, portable watering systems

-          Basic infrastructure: holding pens and loading chutes

-          The challenges of simplicity

-          Land requirements

-          Livestock requirements: cow/calf vs. feeder cattle

-          Basic grass management

-          Personal requirements: how livestock affects your lifestyle

-          Selling surplus

-          Questions and answers

If you’re serious about raising your own food but you feel intimidated by taking the first steps to purchase cattle, this workshop is for you.  Come and enjoy an evening of camaraderie and swap advice with other beginner graziers and homesteaders.

Cost is $20/person.  Cash only at the door.  Please dress appropriately for the outdoors: we will be walking through pastures rain or shine.  Some physical ability is necessary.  Spaces are extremely limited.
